Reciprocal Integrity
Reciprocity means treating others the way you want to be treated.
Integrity means your language and your behavior line up.
Reciprocal integrity means interpreting others’ language and behavior as charitably as you want yours to be interpreted.
Reciprocal integrity is the practice of bringing out the best in others by reflecting their integrity back to them, while also relating to others such that they bring out the best in you regardless of their behavior.
Motivational interviewing. Generalized steelmanning. Assume good intent. Enemies as teachers. Your haters are biggest fans.
Language is a common-pool resource. Behavior changes the meaning of words, and so does interpretation.
Integrity is very important for group coordination because language is the primary interface through which members of a group exchange information. Words must be reliably meaningful in order to be effective as a coordination mechanism.
